What is a QR code?

A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that smartphones can read with their built-in camera. Unlike a standard barcode which stores data in one direction, a QR code stores data both horizontally and vertically — allowing it to hold much more information in a small space.

What can a QR code contain?

QR codes can encode many types of data:

  • Website URLs — the most common use
  • Contact information (vCard)
  • WiFi network credentials
  • Plain text messages
  • Email addresses, phone numbers, SMS messages
  • App Store / Google Play links
  • Calendar events, locations, and more

How does scanning work?

Modern smartphones (iOS 11+ and Android 8+) can scan QR codes natively through the camera app — no separate scanner app is needed. Just point your camera at the code, tap the notification that appears, and you're redirected instantly.

Static vs Dynamic QR codes

There are two fundamental types of QR codes. Static codes encode data directly — once printed, the content can never change. Dynamic codes use a short redirect URL, so the destination can be updated anytime without reprinting. Unqode SmartQR creates dynamic QR codes by default.

💡 Always choose dynamic QR codes for print campaigns. You can correct mistakes, update URLs, and track scan analytics — all without reprinting.
