Dynamic vs static QR codes explained
Understanding the difference between static and dynamic QR codes is essential before you start printing anything. The choice affects whether you can update content, track scans, and fix mistakes after going to print.
Static QR codes
A static QR code has its destination permanently baked into the pattern of the code. The URL or content is encoded directly in the black and white modules.
- Cannot be changed after printing
- No analytics or scan tracking
- No account required to generate
- Works forever — no expiry as long as the destination URL exists
- Slightly smaller file size (fewer modules needed)
Dynamic QR codes
A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect URL (e.g. smartqr.unqode.com/r/abc123) rather than the final destination. When scanned, the redirect server looks up the current destination and forwards the user there.
- Destination can be updated anytime without reprinting
- Full scan analytics: device, country, browser, time of day
- Password protection, expiry dates, and scan limits
- A/B testing and geo-targeting (Business plan)
- Requires an active Unqode SmartQR account
